IT'S OVER, PARTY UP IN THIS POST

http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25968987278&sid=1

Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as conversation threading, the ability to rate posts up or down, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, ( http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/mission.html ) and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

BBCNews - Blizzard backs down over gamers using real names

Personal note from the mod here-

You guys. YOU GUYS. I am so fucking proud of you all for coming together on this. Thank you so much to everyone who provided a link, who helped spread the word, who helped educate others about why exactly this was a bad idea and why it unfairly targeted certain groups of people - if I could give you all a hug right now, I totally would. You're all amazing and every last one of you should feel good.

I'm drinking to you all, tonight, wow_ladies.

FURTHER NOTE:

This may not really be over, y'all. This whole fiasco shows that Blizzard took the loyalty of its users for granted, and that they do not share our valuation of privacy and personal security. I don't want to dim our celebration here - because this is a real victory, and should go untarnished - but I think this has come as a sharp wakeup call for many of us, and it is imperative that we not go back to sleep on this issue, and do not let them try to pull a stunt like this again. This community - both wow_ladies and the gaming community as a whole - just proved it has a shocking capability to mobilize, which is a fabulous resource. I hope we won't have to use it again.

Game on, wow_ladies.

What I find strange is this:

Surely they knew that as a community, we READ the patch notes, take a few weeks to digest them and then adjust our behaviour accordingly?

This was exactly that - the read the patch notes (it took us a bit longer to put the pieces together and it was so big and outside the box) and then collectively concluded that OUR beloved game in its present and coming incarnation (RealID, no privacy, FaceBook merger, ingame-advertising) the game had ceased to be worth playing

Thank you to everyone that spread the word far and wide!

Thank you to everyone that posted in the epic legendary thread of RealID doom!

Thank you to everyone that cancelled their accounts immediately.

Thank you to everyone that sold stock (by yesterday the prices had noticed).

I suppose I should see about resubscribing both my accounts now. =)

SO BLOODY HAPPY! GO GO WOW COMMUNITY!

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Honestly, I've been feeling almost physically ill for the past couple of days after the news hit. I didn't want to quit but I was ready to do so if they wouldn't back down. Every article and blog post I read about RealID was negative.

I FEEL SO RELIEVED NOW I DON'T HAVE WORDS FOR IT

^ this is EXACTLY what I was going to say!

I literally just got up and started dancing... And here I was two pages on the scanner away from sending Blizz my "legal change of name" form so I would be under my married name for my RealID (I do not use my married name for ANYTHING, has always been my maiden name, so if anyone went to Google me, they'd get zip!).

THANK YOU BLIZZARD FOR LISTENING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS!

And here I was about to post my personal story on the previous discussions. I'm so light-hearted and giddy right now OMG :DDDD

*insert dancing yeti here*

But why does it have to be "at this time"?

Blizzard, you continue to confuzzle me.

To make the backflip sound less drastic than it actually is. "At this time" sounds like a delay and, while that may yet be the case, it's a bit more face-saving than "The marketing folks realised the idea was epic fail so we've canned it."

Good, damnit.

Next time, take half a second to THINK about the consequences of your planned policies, mmkay, kids? Jeebus. It still boggles my mind that NOBODY at the company spoke up loud enough to stop this before it was announced to the public.

But that's all behind us. For now. I'm glad that they came to their senses, and I don't doubt that the voices of this community played a large role in their reversal.

YAY LADIES.

"It still boggles my mind that NOBODY at the company spoke up loud enough to stop this before it was announced to the public."

Maybe they did? Maybe the confusion about whether or not Blizz employees' real names will appear on forums was because some at Blizz didn't want it to happen?

HOLY FUCKING OMG GIMME A VUVUZELA I NEED TO PARTY AT WORKKKKKKKKK

lol YES THIS SITUATION CALLS FOR VUVUZELAS!

THIS IS AWESOME! THEY FINALLY FREAKIN LISTENED!

WOOT! /does the female Nelf dance/

My faith in Blizz is restored! \o/

LOVE the princess and the frog one.

This right here? This is why Blizzard is the king. Pixar has said that Blizzard is the Pixar of the game companies, and they're right.

OMG BEST NEWS EVER OMG

THANK THE LIGHT THEY CAME TO THEIR SENSES

SORRY FOR CAPS TOO EXCITED FOR ORDINARY CAPITALIZATION/PUNCTUATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FUCK YES I'M DIVING IN TO THE GIF FOLDER BRB

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS WE DID IT!

I just got a warm happy feeling! I am seriously so happy I could cry right now!

*hugs everyone*

I almost want to cry, I'm so happy. Now I can stop mentally preparing myself for deleting everything and I can be excited about Cataclysm again!

I AM SO HAPPY!
I GET MY NELVES BACK
CUSS YES!

First: Yay!

Second: This is only the first battle, ladies. I'm betting it won't be the last we hear of RealID and their "plans" for it. We'll have to keep the spears sharpened.

Third: (Also) Yay! Party!

Holy shit!

...I'd love to be happier about this, but "at this time" concerns me, and there's still the matter of how Blizzard employees treated those of us with problems. :/ That latter is what sealed the deal on my cancelling.

The phrase "at this time" also pinged my loophole detector.
